This book contains lots of symbolism. This symbolism is mostly found in the story's simulations, faction's beliefs, and setting. In simulations symbolism is used to get results from that simulation, a single choice can determine the personality of a character. For example, in the first simulation Beatrice went through, she had to choose between a basket with a knife or a cheese. She made no choice at all, but if she had chosen one, then this would tell a lot about her. In this case, if she had chosen the knife, then this means she's brave enough to actually use a knife or she thinks it is more important than the cheese. On the other hand, if she had chosen the cheese, then this would tell us that she's not brave enough to use a knife, and she'd rather do things in a more peaceful way. This kind of symbolism is used throughout the story. There's also symbolism in the faction's setting and beliefs. This includes the way they dress and the colors they wear in each faction. For example, in candor they use black and white colors because for them these are the most honest colors of all. Also the way they act, talk and think contains lots of symbolism. That's why symbolism is so important in Divergent.
