In Divergent book there are many principle characters. They all somehow have an important role in the story's plot and development. Some of this principle characters are protagonists or antagonists with an special personality and way of thinking. Here are some of them:
Beatrice (Tris): She´s the principle character in the story. She´s the protagonist and narrator in the book. Beatrice is a brave 16 old girl. Physically she's short and cute, so she´s not really intimidating. For this reason, everyone thinks she's a girl who always needs someone to protect her. In most of the story she´s supposed to act that way to manipulate her enemies. In the way Tris thinks and things, she is actually really brave, strong, and smart. Beatrice and many other characters in this book have a very, very different personality from what you expect due to the way they act and look.
Four (Tobias): Tobias is a complex character. At a first look, you can see Tobias as a strong character with no soft feelings. The way he acts, looks, and talks is intimidating. (Without mentioning he's one of the strongest dauntless). Throughout the book, Tris gets to know Tobias better and they fall in love for each other. During this exchange of feelings, Four results to be a caring and sensitive person. He only shows this hidden side of him with Tris.
Jeanine Matthews: She's the leader of the Erudite. The narrator describes her as an smart (seriously she's named leader of Erudite because of her really high IQ score), clever, and ambitious antagonist. In the book, Jeanine isn't described physically that much, but we can imagine her as a serious, emotionless, ambitious woman due to her actions. Matthews seems to be the primary antagonist.
Eric: He's one of the leaders of the Dauntless. He's described as a cruel, rude, brave, and strong leader. He's helping Jeanine with her plans. Physically he'd got an intimidating look, he's really scary.
Christina, Al, and Will: This are all Beatrice's best friends. They've got an important role in changing Tris emotions by hurting her, helping her, or giving her advice. They all have somehow a say in the choices Tris does.
Tris' family: Caleb, her mom and dad all impact the plot of the story. Caleb sometimes seems to be the only one to understand Beatrice, and he'd got a clever personality. Tris' dad is part of the representatives of the government, he's one who's totally against Jeanine. Beatrice's mom seems to be aware of many things anyone thought she would be. She's an important character in the book. Neither of them are very physically described in the book.
Peter: He's a cruel, rude, strong boy. He hates Beatrice and makes her life harder and problematic. Peter is always causing trouble and is the villain that has hurt Beatrice physically and emotionally the most.
